Call for Artists – Downtown Garland Seeking signature artwork for downtown mural project
THE CITY OF GARLAND ANNOUNCES A $28,500 DOWNTOWN MURAL PROJECT.
Downtown Garland announces a call for professional mural artists to submit qualifications to be considered for the design and installation of a publicly viewable mural. Site location is on the exterior wall of a building framing a small public parking lot.
The art for the western elevation of 625 W. State Street, Garland, TX 75040 will be:
- Site-specific
- Able to last for at least 15 years without any required maintenance
- Original, creative style and content by selected artist
- Supported by project narrative and description
- Executed within one month
Interested applicants will submit:
- Resume
- Portfolio of completed work
- Narrative of approach to project including site preparation, conceptual vision (narrative), and execution
SITE SPECIFICATIONS AND BUDGET:
Applicants are required to demonstrate how the preparation and cleaning material, paint material, and any other applicable materials necessary for the mural’s completion are compatible with the current surface of the wall. Proposals shall not exceed the budget listed and will be inclusive of all itemized costs associated with the timely completion of the mural, including but not limited to, design fees, materials (including shipping costs and additional fees), labor, rentals, travel, per diem expenses, commercial liability insurance, and contingency funds.
- The western elevation of 625 W. State Street is comprised of a 50’ x 13’ and 50’ x 16’ wall of painted brick and has a budget allocation of up to $28,500.
- Exterior wall faces a public parking lot for the district. Active use of the lot should be a consideration in design. (Google Maps Street View of wall.)
SCHEDULE:
- Tuesday, November 21: Call for Artists opens
- Monday, December 4: Submission of qualifications deadline
- Wednesday, December 6: Finalists announced
- Wednesday, December 13: Conceptual renderings due
- Friday, December 15: Selected artist announced
- Tuesday, January 2: Deadline for project initiation
- Friday, February 2: Mural must be complete
ELIGIBILITY:
Any Texas-based artist or collection of artists with demonstrated experience in large-format artwork may apply.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To be considered, all applicants are required to complete a primary contact form and upload the below materials by 11:59 PM CST, Monday, December 4, 2023.
- Primary Contact Information: Each submission must include a primary contact
- Resume: The artist shall submit a professional resume; if the submission is for a collection of artists, each artist shall submit a resume.
- Supporting Works: Include at last three (3) digital images of completed works with an image identification sheet with descriptions.
- Narrative of Approach: Describe artist's approach to project including site preparation, conceptual vision (narrative), and execution of project. Panel seeks insight on the artist's creative process for this specific site. Renderings or sketches are not required.
SELECTION:
A selection committee will select finalists for the wall to create a site-specific proposal. Finalists are required to participate in an in-person site visit and will receive an artist fee of $250 for renderings.
